Southwestern, Dunkirk Advance In Sectional Playoffs

BUFFALO — Katie Brinkley hit a two-run double to open a five-run fourth inning as No. 10 Southwestern took the lead for good en route to a 22-10 Section VI Class B2 prequarterfinal victory over No. 7 Olmsted on Tuesday.

Sofia Genareo led the Trojans’ 19-hit attack with a 5-for-5 day that included a triple and three RBIs. Maddie Dubois went 3 for 6 with a double, a triple and three RBIs while Erin Radack, Kim Truver and Ashton Beckerink each had two hits.

Southwestern scored in every inning, including three in the third, five in the fourth, four in the sixth and five in the seventh.

Elly Perez opened the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run while Gabrielle McDuffie added a pair of three-run home runs later in the game for the Owls, who totaled just five hits.

Beckerink went the first four-plus innings, striking out six and walking four before Genareo finished with six strikeouts and two walks.

The Trojans will travel to No. 2 Royalton-Hartland for a quarterfinal matchup Thursday at 4:45 p.m.

MARAUDERS ADVANCE

DUNKIRK — No. 7 Dunkirk survived a late rally from No. 10 East Aurora for a 14-8 Section VI Class B1 prequarterfinal win.

The Lady Marauders scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Olivia Yerico-Piazza started the rally with a single and eventually made her way around the bases as a result of three wild pitches. Monica Pokoj and Emma Newton both reached base via walks, and with two outs, Ashley Gotowka reached on a dropped third strike. As Pokoj scored, Newton ran to second, and a wild throw by the catcher allowed another run to score.

Dunkirk continued its momentum in the second inning with seven runs scored. After Jessica Beehler singled, Kymi Nance hit an RBI double off the fence. Yerico-Piazza followed with the blast of the game, a two-run home run that cleared the center-field fence. Of the next four batters, three reached via error. The only hit during that time was a two-run double from Newton. Later in the inning, Courtney Zatorski contributed with a two-run single.

The Marauders were able to get two runs back in the bottom half of the third inning. Nance started off with a single and stole second base. Yerico-Piazza followed with an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch.

Dunkirk allowed East Aurora back in the game with five errors in the fifth inning.

Pokoj pitched a complete game, surrendering eight runs (four earned) on nine hits and three walks while fanning 12.

The Marauders offense recorded 11 hits and three walks. Yerico-Piazza went 4 for 4, including a home run and a double. Newton had two extra-base hits with a triple and double. Nance also had a multiple hit game that included a double.

Dunkirk advances to play at No. 2 Alden on Thursday.

ADAMS HURLS NO-HITTER MONDAY

FORESTVILLE — MaKena Adams threw her second no-hitter of the year Monday, leading Frewsburg to a 2-0 win over host Forestville (8-6) in nonleague softball action.

The junior fanned 14 batters and issued no walks while hitting a double as well to finish off a 16-2 regular season for the Bears.

Riley Chitester also struck a double in the win.

Kaitlyn Alguire had a strong day in the circle for the hosts, giving up just two hits while striking out three and walking two.
