PANAMA — Panama’s Ashlyn Harvey had the full support of her offense throughout Thursday afternoon’s Section VI Class D softball prequarterfinal against No. 8 Clymer — not that it was necessary.

The junior tossed a no-hitter, striking out 11 batters and issuing two walks to lead the No. 1 Panthers to a 16-0 win over the Pirates (0-13).

That victory pushed Panama’s record to 11-2 on the year and sets up a quarterfinal meeting with No. 4 Brocton at 4:45 p.m. next Wednesday after the Bulldogs topped No. 5 Pine Valley, 8-4, on Thursday.

“Honestly since probably right after our spring break, she has just come back really strong,” Panama coach Tammy Hosier said of Harvey. “Everything is contagious, her pitching is better and stronger and our hitting is better and stronger. All of it is contagious. Our fielding is coming around, too.”

The Panthers got on the board with a couple of runs in the first inning as Clymer’s Jayla Linton tried to settle into a rhythm. The lead grew to 3-0 after Jessica Mistretta started off the second with a triple to center field and was sent home with an RBI single by Marra Hovey. Panama did the bulk of its offensive damage in that inning.

In addition to taking advantage of errors, Harvey smacked an RBI single, Sarah Harvey an RBI single, Mistretta a two-RBI single, Maci Johnson a two-RBI double to center field, and Natalie Angeletti an RBI single over second to cap off the scoring.

“The biggest difference I guess would be two things: (Harvey) is hitting her spots and her different pitches are working, and then the whole team atmosphere. We just need to keep working on all of the things that we’ve been working on in practice and the fielding, the good throws. Basically all the little things and then everything comes together.”

The Pirates’ Kate Honey reached first base in the fourth due to an error, but Harvey continued find the strike zone and get ahead of batters.

“Ashlyn just works so hard, not just in the offseason, but she has pitching coaches and she works extra hard year-round and she has just been really fine-tuning her pitches,” said Hosier.

Ava Morton added an RBI single to short center field in the bottom of the sixth for the Panthers, and also completed a double play to Angeletti at first base for the final two outs of the day.

Johnson had a single and a double while Mistretta added a single, double and triple.

Panama bested Clymer by just one run, 9-8 on April 11, but did not have the services of Harvey in that game.

Hosier’s team holds 8-1 and 13-2 wins over Brocton, coming on May 8 and May 18 respectively.

“We played them last Saturday and we beat them 13-2, but we can’t rely on that,” said Hosier. “It’s 0-0 right now. Whoever loses goes home. They are a great team and they are going to come out to win, too. They want to keep playing and we just need to keep playing our game.”
