Jayhawks Sweep Twin Bill At Broome CC; Play Two Today

BINGHAMTON — The Jamestown Community College baseball team had a long day Saturday, but Coach Matt Cummings couldn’t have been any happier.

“It all came together for us,” he said.

Indeed.

Caleb Caldwell belted a three-run home run in the first inning of the first game and Carlo Rodriguez had three hits and drove in two runs on his way to an outstanding afternoon as the Jayhawks swept a doubleheader against Broome CC, 9-5 and 10-7, in NJCAA Region 3 Division III action.

The win raised Jamestown CC’s record to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in Region 3 Division III. The two teams meet again today in a twin bill at Diethrick Park. The first pitch for the first game is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Cummings wouldn’t mind a repeat performance.

“To leave JCC by 7:30 and travel 3 hours, 45 minutes, get off the bus and get two wins (is huge).”

In the first game, the Jayhawks used three hits and two RBIs from Rodriguez and Robert Aracena, and two doubles from winning pitcher Evan Harrison, but it was Caldwell’s two-out, three-run homer in the first inning that gave them the lead they never relinquished.

“Anytime you can jump out to a good lead like that it makes our pitching staff calm down and throw strikes,” Cummings said.

In addition to Rodriguez — he had six hits on the afternoon — Aracena and Harrison, other offensive highlights included Jake Brown’s two-run single in the top of the sixth inning and a double by Spencer TeWinkle.

Losing pitcher Ben Cosica had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs; and Luke Miller had two hits and three RBIs for Broome CC.

In the nightcap, Jamestown CC scored nine runs in the third inning and rode the five-hit pitching of winner Braiden Blair, Zach Kelley and Paul Tripi to complete the sweep.

Rodriguez (double) had three hits and two RBIs; Tripi and Brown had two hits and two RBIs apiece; and Aracena drove in a pair of runs.

Maxwell Huffman smacked a double and Adam Burns drove in a pair of runs for Broome CC (1-9, 1-3).
