Area Schools Receive State Scholar-Athlete Recognition

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association released its list of scholar-athletes for the winter sports season, with Jamestown leading the way for local programs.

The Red Raiders qualified four athletes in boys basketball, six in boys bowling, eight in boys indoor track and field, 12 in boys swimming, eight in girls basketball, three in girls bowling, 23 in girls indoor track and field and four in wrestling.

To be selected as an individual scholar-athlete a student must earn an individual GPA of 90 or better.

Following are the honorees from other area high schools:

¯ Frewsburg has qualified six athletes for boys basketball, four for boys bowling, 18 for boys swimming and diving, five for girls basketball, five for girls bowling and two for wrestling.

¯ Maple Grove has earned spots for four members of its boys basketball program, five for boys bowling, 10 for girls basketball, six for girls bowling and seven for wrestling.

¯ Southwestern is led by six members of its boys basketball program, three for boys bowling, nine for girls basketball, three for girls bowling and 10 for wrestling.

¯ Falconer is represented by four members of its boys basketball program, seven for boys bowling, nine for indoor boys track and field, six for girls basketball, seven for girls bowling, 22 for girls indoor track and field and nine for wrestling.

¯ Brocton has qualified six members from its boys basketball program, while Cassadaga Valley is led by 12 girls basketball players and three boys basketball players.

¯ Cattaraugus-Little Valley has placed three members of its boys basketball program, one from boys bowling, eight from girls basketball, two from girls bowling and one member of its wrestling program.

¯ Chautauqua Lake is led by three boys basketball players, seven girls basketball players and two wrestlers.

¯ Dunkirk has placed three boys bowlers and eight girls bowlers.

¯ Fredonia has earned recognition for five boys bowlers, 13 boys swimmers, nine girls basketball players, eight girls bowlers and seven members of its girls indoor track and field team.

¯ Gowanda is represented by five wrestlers and four boys basketball players, while Olean has qualified 12 boys swimmers, eight boys basketball players and nine girls basketball players.

¯ Panama is represented by 10 girls basketball players, eight boys swimmers and six boys basketball players.

¯ Pine Valley is led by eight girls basketball players.

¯ Salamanca is led by seven girls bowlers, five boys bowlers, three boys basketball players and three girls basketball players.

¯ Westfield has five boys basketball players.
