Weather Cancels Section VI Dual Meet

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley Will Return To State Meet

Friday afternoon Section VI officials announced that today’s scheduled team dual wrestling championships at Lancaster High School had been cancelled due to severe weather that is expected to impact the Buffalo area throughout the weekend.

The event will not be rescheduled, and Section VI officials have decided that Large School No. 1 seed Olean and Small School No. 1 Falconer/Cassadaga Valley will represent Section VI at next weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships.

The Dual Meet Championships are scheduled to begin on Saturday morning at SRC Arena on the campus of Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.

“It’s not the way we wanted to qualify, but we think we were deserving,” Falconer/Cassadaga Valley head coach Drew Wilcox said Friday evening. “We beat No. 2 Pioneer and No. 3 Iroquois, and we beat Fredonia and most of the top teams.”

The Golden Cougars and the Huskies earned their respective top seeds via a points system that awards teams with more points for earning wins against other successful teams.

Wilcox’s team will now have a chance to pad its resume even further this Wednesday when undefeated Olean visits Falconer with the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 title on the line.

“That will be an interesting matchup,” Wilcox said of Wednesday’s match. “They’re our rival. Both teams are always up for that match. It will be a packed house and should be a good tune-up.”
