With just under four minutes to play in the final quarter of Tuesday night’s Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West matchup between Olean and host Southwestern, Erin Radack made her presence known.

Shortly after hitting three foul shots — the result of being fouled on a long-range attempt — Radack was passed open beyond the arc on a sweet feed by Sofia Genareo, burying a shot to give her team a 53-51 lead.

Radack would make two more foul shots, as would teammate Gianna Hoose, as Southwestern (10-5, 5-1) was able to hold off the Huskies (12-2, 4-2) for a 57-52 final.

“She is a great shooter and great shooters can make open shots,” Olean head coach Chelsea Bowker said of Radack’s 3. “We held her great in the first half, in the second half we kind of fell apart. The 3 she got was a five-second wide-open shot. We left her completely open and that’s our fault.”

Radack was named the Intense Milk/Cross Training Athletics Character Athlete of the Game for the Trojans for a 28-point, nine-rebound effort that included two assists and a steal.

“Erin game-in game-out always shows up in terms of being a critical, clutch player for us,” Southwestern coach Dave Turnbull said.

“Gianna Hoose … no one works harder,” Turnbull added. “I was so happy to see here make those shots because she has earned everything she’s gotten and it’s always great to see good things happen to kids like that.”

The Trojans were looking at a five-point deficit at the end of three quarters, after jockeying back-and-forth with the Huskies out to a 33-33 stalemate at halftime.

Radack began her night with a patented slashing inside drive for an easy 2 before Genareo hit back-to-back shots down low on her way to a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double that included five assists.

Senior star Sara Pfeiffer began her night with some inside work as well, while Olean was able to find its outside shooting rhythm with a 3 from Justine Brooks and another by Elyse Graham to pick up a 12-11 lead.

Pfeiffer extended that to a three-point margin with an inside drive as well as a steal-and-finish, but Hoose was able to counter with an inside bank for Southwestern.

The Trojans earned a 26-23 lead after Reece Beaver hit a long 2, and that margin grew to six points as Radack buried a contested 3 on the ensuing possession.

Finishing with 29 points and eight rebounds, Pfieffer was forced to settle for inside looks throughout the night thanks to a tenacious defensive performance from Beaver.

“What Reece was able to accomplish in terms of just playing great, great defense on, again, a great, great player. For a seventh-grader to do that is just astonishing,” Turnbull said. “I told the kids I didn’t want (Pfeiffer) to get any 3s. We have to run her off the 3-point line, if she scored inside, she scored inside. … I wanted her to work for every single bucket because she is such a great player. The girls were unbelievable. It was a total team win defensively.”

Pfeiffer was indeed held scoreless from beyond the arc, while Southwestern was able to rely on supplemental scoring as both Beaver and Hoose chipped in 7 points apiece, with Kim Truver adding a big bucket for the hosts to lead Southwestern’s push early in the final period.

“I knew if we weren’t ready it was going to be a blow out, and I knew if we were ready it was going to be a tough game,” Bowker said. “They are well-coached and very well-balanced. They have very good players, they are big, they are aggressive and they can do it all.”

NOTES: Sophia Aiello grabbed six points, four rebounds and two assists for Olean and was named Character Athlete of the Game while Brooks added 12 points. … Carissa Minarovich grabbed three rebounds, three steals and an assists for Southwestern. … Southwestern claimed the JV contest, 42-34.
