Pannes Pours In 32, Trojans Hold On

DUNKIRK — Cooper Pannes poured in 32 points and Alex Card added 13 to lift Southwestern to a 59-53 victory over Dunkirk in a Division 1 West game Tuesday night.

The Trojans (9-2) led 24-18 at halftime, Dunkirk fought back to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but the they pulled it out at the end.

HILLBILLIES DOWN T’BIRDS

FREDONIA — There are plenty of tough games and challenging environments on the CCAA Division 1 West boys basketball schedule. Fredonia made its case for the toughest environment of all for visiting teams, with a dominant 79-37 win over Chautauqua Lake at Fredonia High School.

Fredonia (7-4, 4-1) did continue its trend of slow starts, and found itself with only a one point lead, 11-10, toward the end of the first quarter. However, the Hillbillies bounced back to end the first quarter with seven straight points, and led 18-10 after one period of play.

Chautauqua Lake (5-4, 1-4) matched Fredonia early in the second quarter, splitting the first 16 points of the frame. The score was 26-18 Fredonia — and then it all changed. Fredonia finished the first half on a 15-4 run to take a 41-22 lead into halftime over the visiting Thunderbirds.

Fredonia was led by Brayden Myers with 11 points. Nate Shuart had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Hillbillies.

Coming off a performance where he scored a season-high 38 points against Maple Grove, Chautauqua Lake’s Zach Fischer was held in check by Fredonia, finishing with 6 points, while no member of Chautauqua Lake reached double digits in scoring.

WOLEBEN REACHES 1,000

CAREER POINTS

SILVER CREEK– The Silver Creek Black Knights boys basketball team (7-4) hosted Salamanca (7-2) in a CCAA Div. 1 East league clash and came out victorious, 68-42.

Needing just 14 points to achieve the benchmark 1,000th point, Silver Creek’s Brady Woleben had his sights set on history. After an electric first quarter, Woleben needed just two points to achieve his goal late in the first half. With 2:30 left, in transition, Woleben slammed home a monster dunk sending the crowd in an uproar.

Woleben becomes the sixth person in Silver Creek(7-4) history to reach the plateau.

“It means a ton to me. Just the support of all the friends and family. The whole student section that came out tonight, all the coaches,” said Woleben said.

Woleben finished the night with 23 points, while Tucker Gates and Dom Jamison dropped 18 and 15, respectively.

PANAMA BREEZES

FALCONER — Panama (4-5, 2-2) rolled to a 90-44 CCAA Division 2 West win over Falconer (2-8, 0-5) behind some red-hot shooting from beyond the arc, led by Jack Sperry’s five 3s.

Sperry led the winners with 15 points, while Dominic Spontaneo added 13, Braden Cook had 13 and Cameron Barmore collected13 points and 16 rebounds. Gerrit Hinsdale chipped in 8 points and six rebounds while Mitch Hovey had 8 points and seven assists.

Bobby Samuelson led the hosts with 12 points, four rebounds, three blocks, two steals and two assists while Nate Abbey had four assists and 7 points.

WILDCATS PREVAIL

SHERMAN — Sherman (3-7, 3-1) prevailed in a defensive battle against visiting Cassadaga Valley (3-6, 1-3), 46-38, in Division 2 West action.

Mike Beatman led the winners with 12 points and three steals, Keith Gormley chipped in eight rebounds, 3 points and four blocks and Collin Ramsey added 11 points in the win.

Mark Swanson led the Cougars with 16 points and five steals, David Peterson came down with seven rebounds, dished out eight assists and finished with 7 points and Connor Crabtree had 11 points and seven rebounds.

RANDOLPH BREEZES

PORTVILLE — Tyler Hind and Andrew Bernard scored 18 points apiece to lead Randolph to a 71-38 victory over Portville in a Division 1 East basketball game Tuesday night.

The Cardinals (7-2, 2-0) led, 44-21, by halftime and cruised to the victory to remain unbeaten in the division.

Also scoring in double figures for Randolph were Gabe McCoy with 12 points and Kaleb Steward with 11. McCoy also grabbed seven rebounds and Hind added three steals and five assists.

The Panthers (3-7, 0-2) were led by Jarett Mathes with 12 points and three assists.

OLEAN ROLLS PAST FREWSBURG

FREWSBURG — The Olean Huskies’ perfect season continued with a 78-44 Division 1 West victory over Frewsburg.

Mike Schmidt led the Huskies (11-0, 4-0) with 16 points, 10 assists, six steals and four rebounds, Matt Droney had 13 points, Brian Ramarge had 12, James Covi had 10 points and Josh Bihler had nine.

Olean shot 30 of 61 from the floor, including 22 of 39 from inside the arc.

The Bears, who trailed, 36-16, at the break, were outscored 28-3 in the third quarter.

Brad Nelson led Frewsburg (5-5, 2-3) with 19 points and Quinn Conlan added 14 points and seven rebounds.
