Jackals Run Out Of Time

Jamestown Falls To Albany In Front Of Nice Opening-Night Crowd

Jamestown coach Mark Anderson sat down in a room adjacent to the gym at the Physical Education Complex shortly after the Jackals suffered a 99-95 loss to Albany in The Basketball League opener Friday night.

But he hardly looked like a defeated man.

“I like the effort,” he said. “We just have to string together four quarters.”

Once leading by as many as 21 points before intermission, Jamestown was outscored, 57-38, in the final two periods to send a large crowd home disappointed.

Edwin Ubilies, who sports a resume that includes a stint with the Washington Wizards of the NBA, a 2012 D League Rookie of the Year Award and a North American Premier Basketball League Most Valuable Player honor in 2018 to his credit, scored 27 points to pace the Patroons. Darius Paul added 18, Lloyd Johnson had 15, Anthony Moe collected 13 and Steven Cunningham chipped in 11.

Michael Davenport led the Jackals with 28 points, including 17 in the first half, Troy Taylor had 15 points and nine assists, and DeAngelo Stewart added 12 points and nine boards.

“We have to shore up some defensive things,” said Anderson, who played without starter James Helton (eye) and was without another starter, Glenroy Carr Jr., for most of the game after he suffered a head laceration in the first quarter.

“We gave up some easy baskets, especially underneath where we didn’t even contest,” Anderson added.

The way the first half unfolded it appeared Jamestown was on its way to victory.

Behind Davenport, the Jackals led, 52-31, late in the second quarter before setting for a 57-42 at the break. Helping their cause was strong shooting — Jamestown connected on 25 of 48 attempts compared to Albany’s 15 of 45 — but it was an entirely different story the rest of the way.

The Patroons scored the first eight points in the third quarter, went on a 14-2 run later in the period, and when the teams broke their huddles to start the final 12 minutes, the game was tied, 76-all.

Ubilies put on a show in the final period, scoring 13 points, including a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining, to give Albany a 98-95 lead. Jamestown had a chance to tie, but Jay Dupree -Gibson’s 3-pointer was off the mark, Moe was fouled and he made one of two free throws with less than a second left to close out the scoring.

“Basketball is a game of runs, but at the pro level the game is never over until it’s over,” Anderson said. “We didn’t run out of steam, we ran out of time. I’m really excited about how these guys performed tonight. Everyone who went in contributed something.”

Jamestown will be right back at it on Sunday when it entertains New York at 3 p.m. Anderson, who said he was going to leave the gym last night with his figurative glass “half full,” can’t wait.

“You’ll see we’ll be pouring more things into that glass,” he said with a smile. “I’m positive they want to get back out there. They’ll be ready Sunday.”

NOTES: The Patroons had a decided edge at the foul line where they connected on 20 attempts compared to only five for Jamestown. … From the field, Albany shot 37 of 83, while Jamestown was 43 of 97, but only 19 of 50 after intermission.
