Bonnies Win Second Straight, Breeze Past Delaware State, 90-61

ST. BONAVENTURE – Five players scored in double figures as St. Bonaventure rolled to a 90-61 win over Delaware State on Saturday at the Reilly Center.

The Bonnies earned their second straight win to improve to 3-5. Jalen Poyser led all scorers with 20 points while Nelson Kaputo and Courtney Stockard scored 16 apiece. Junior center Amadi Ikpeze posted a new career high of 14 points and nine rebounds, while Kyle Lofton finished with 12 points.

St. Bonaventure never trailed, with the closest margin of two points coming early in the afternoon at 11-9. From there, the Bonnies rattled off 12 unanswered points to push their lead to 23-9. Poyser made back-to-back three-pointers in the run.

It was a 40-21 halftime edge and Delaware State was not able to pull any closer than 14 points in the second half. The Bonnies led 66-52 with 8:59 remaining when they pulled away for good with a 11-2 run that pushed the score to 77-53 with 6:10 left.

St. Bonaventure went 8-15 from three-point range in the second half and was 12-25 from behind the arc for the game, tying its season high.

“It was good to see us break out offensively, share the ball, and have some fun,” Coach Mark Schmidt said. “The guys played well and they should be feeling good about themselves, but at the same time, as coaches it’s our job to make sure they know there is a lot we can improve on. We’re nowhere near where we need to be on both ends (of the court).”

NOTES: Amadi Ikpeze’s 14 points were eight more than his prior best scoring total this season. His nine rebounds are also a season high. … Tshiefu Ngalakulondi set a career high with four blocks. … Osun Osunniyi, who entered the weekend second in the Atlantic 10 in blocked shots, added three more against the Hornets and now has 22 this season. … Poyser’s eight assists are one shy of his career high, set against Western Kentucky when he was at UNLV. … Saturday was just the second meeting between the teams; the Bonnies are 2-0 now against Delaware State. … St. Bonaventure’s four-game home stand continues Wednesday when the Bonnies host Siena in the annual meeting for the Franciscan Cup. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m.
