Yuchnitz Earns Trip To Podium
ITHACA — Karianne Yuchnitz made history earlier this fall when she became Panama’s all-time winningest girls swimmer.
She added an even more significant entry on her aquatic resume on Saturday.
Competing in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships at Ithaca College, the senior finished sixth in the NYSPHSAA and eighth in the Federation in the 50-yard freestyle to earn a place on the medal stand.
Yuchnitz posted a time of 24.03 in the final — a touch slower than in Friday’s preliminary (23.96) — but it was still good enough to tie Sydney Sorbello of Section II’s Bethlehem.
Also in the 50 freestyle, Jamestown’s Allie Stockwell posted a 24.46 in the consolations for 18th place, while Southwestern’s Natalie Fosberg placed 22nd, courtesy of a 24.56 clocking in the bonus race.
Also competing Saturday were Grace Wood of Southwestern and Alexis Trietley of Olean.
Swimming in the consolation 200 freestyle, Wood finished 19th in 1:56.16. Trietley, competing in the 100 freestyle bonus race, posted a time of 52.43, which was good for 21st place.
