ATHENS, Ga. — No. 14/13 Georgia proved to be as advertised Friday night, scoring a 67-40 victory over the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-0), playing for the first time since last season’s NCAA Tournament Second Round, used their size and length for dominance on the boards to build and maintain a comfortable lead. Georgia won the battle of the boards by an overall 53-37 margin including 17 offensive rebounds.

St. Bonaventure (1-1) was led by freshman Asianae Johnson’s nine points while Emily Calabrese and Dajah Logan each had six points. Amanda Oliver pulled down a team-best eight rebounds with Calabrese adding seven. Randolph Central School graduate McKenna Maycock did not play after being injured against Niagara.

St. Bonaventure grabbed the first points of the game on a layup from Johnson, but she would soon have to sit after picking up two quick fouls.

A drive to the bucket followed by a trip to the foul line by Logan brought the score to 8-6 Bulldogs, but the hosts would take control by pushing the tempo and owning the boards. Georgia was able to attempt 20 field goal tries in the first quarter thanks in part to six offensive rebounds, taking a 21-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

Georgia, which went 26-7 and finished second the SEC a season ago, led by 20 at the break and St. Bonaventure could never find rhythm offensively to narrow the deficit.

Bona did its job for the most part defensively, keeping Georgia under 40 percent shooting from the floor until the final moments.

“I really liked our competitive spirit, fighting until the end. I think this was a valuable experience playing against a top-15 team and learning some lessons we need at this point in the season,” Bonnies head coach Jesse Fleming said. “This is a game that hopefully is going to make us better and prepare us for games down the road.”

The Bonnies return home to open their 2018-19 Reilly Center schedule on Tuesday night against Little Three rival Canisius. That contest is slated to get underway at 7 p.m.

NOTES: Friday was the second meeting all-time between St. Bonaventure and Georgia in women’s basketball. Georgia claimed a victory in 2012 in the New Mexico Thanksgiving Tournament in the only other previous meeting. Like this year’s team, that Bonaventure squad was extremely young, including four freshmen who would go on to lead the program to a WNIT berth one year later and an NCAA Tournament appearance as seniors. … Eight different players scored for St. Bonaventure, though none reached double figures.
