Rebels Unable To Build Upon Friday Win

Despite falling victim to the most dangerous lead in hockey, the Northeast Generals were able to get their two-goal margin right back at Northwest Arena on Saturday night.

The Generals (6-9-1-1) picked up a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in a two-minute stretch during the third period on their way to a 4-2 win over the Jamestown Rebels (9-8-1-1) in North American Hockey League action.

Jamestown was able to climb out of its two-goal deficit with third-period tallies by Antonio Venuto and Lewis Crosby, but quickly gave those back with some defensive miscues down the home stretch.

“We didn’t deserve to win that hockey game,” Jamestown coach Joe Coombs said. “For 40 minutes we didn’t work, we didn’t think, we didn’t do nothing. It is much more of the same, it’s just the same old thing. They can come back all they want, but at the end of the day we can’t play 20 minutes of hockey, or in fact 10 minutes, and expect to win a hockey game. We’re beating a dead horse.”

The Rebels were sporting alternate jerseys on Saturday as part of Military/First Responders Appreciation Night, and got their evening started with a odd-man rush by Noah Finstrom that ended with a pass being slid right through the goal crease but could not be finished off.

John Jaworski responded to that chance by forcing a turnover for the Generals and letting a shot go that was grabbed by Jamestown goaltender Ryan Keane for the first of his 24 saves on the night.

Alex Frye picked up back-to-back chances for the hosts midway through the period, earning a scoring chance on a wraparound and then taking a shot in close off a drop pass that was stopped by David Fessenden.

The Rebels earned a power play in the closing minutes of the first, with Lukas Uhler and Jin Lee having the best chances to get on the board with the man-advantage.

From the very first shift of the second period, Northeast looked primed to be the first to light the lamp as Louis Boudon and Brady Gaudette picked up wrist shots that were turned away by Keane. In the end, some tic-tac-toe passing between Matthew Rutigliano and Boudon set up the first goal of the night for the Generals, with Ryan Rowland receiving a look at an open net for the easy finish.

The Rebels earned a chance minutes after that goal with a power play of their own, but could not find the equalizer with the man-advantage.

Northeast picked up its second goal with just over one minute remaining in the second, taking advantage of a botched clear by the Rebels. It was Connor Marshall who finished off that two-on-one with a low shot between the legs of Keane.

The Rebels found their first goal of the night with the clock showing 16:28 in the third, as Antonio Venuto picked up his third of the season from Noah Finstrom and Augustine Moore.

Jamestown then found the equalizer with the man-advantage as Alex Frye worked his way down to the goal line, feeding a pass to Lewis Crosby that was wired home from the faceoff dot.

Alex Cohen gave Northeast the lead back with eight minutes remaining, finishing off a wrist shot after taking a pass from Connor Marshall in the slot.

Ryan Rowland’s final tally of the night came off assists by Louis Boudon and Rutigliano on a bouncing puck that was thrown to the net and could not be reached by Keane.

“We all have our spurts,” Coombs said of the East Division teams. “I think that Johnstown right now is the team that has got their act together the most, and I think the rest of them, we’re all sort of bunched together and we’re just going to see who can get their act together. It is the teams that can find the consistency at any level that are the good teams, we just keep beating ourselves.”

The Rebels will travel to meet Wilkes-Barr/Scranton this coming weekend.
