JCC Takes Seventh At Nationals

ROCHESTER, Minn. — After a disappointing loss to No. 6 Lorain County CC on Friday, Jamestown Community College rallied to win the seventh-place match Saturday at the NJCAA Division III Championships at the UCR Regional Sports Center.

The seventh-seeded Jayhawks beat No. 8 Queensborough, 26-24, 21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-10.

Kendyl Austin, who was named to the all-tournament team, led Jamestown CC with 21 kills, eight digs and an ace; Jenna Caskey had 16 kills, 19 digs and four assists; Kaylin Brumagin had eight kills; Sierra Wells had 41 assists, 13 digs and six kills; and Cameryn Hawkins had 18 digs.

“To end your season on a win is a huge highlight,” Jayhawks coach Ashley Lund said. “You don’t get many chances to do that, and to do that twice at a national level. I’m happy with seventh and I’m very proud of the girls and what they did.

“Queensborough was good. They hit hard and were digging balls. We had some great defense from Cameryn, and Kendyl and Jenna Caskey were on fire, which helped push us to where we needed to be.”

Paola Beniquez led Queensborough with 21 kills and 18 digs; Ashly Saladin had 13 kills and nine digs; and Angie Nicholes had 10 kills and 18 digs.

Top-seeded Owens won the national title, 25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 19-25, 15-13, over No. 3 Eastfield.

No. 4 Rochester beat No. 2 Central Lakes, 26-24, 25-19, 25-23, in the third-place match.

Lorain County topped No. 5 Rock Valley, 25-11, 26-24, 25-15, for fifth place.
