GROTON, Conn. — Travis Wells is in his fourth season as the coach of the Jamestown Community College women’s basketball team.

He’s never had a better win than the one the Jayhawks recorded Sunday afternoon.

Nicole Johnson scored 22 points, Alexis Rodenbaugh had 21 and Olivia Lynn added 15 to lead Jamestown CC to an 89-59 victory over the University of Connecticut-Avery Point, which entered the NJCAA non-conference game as the third-ranked team in all of Division III.

The Jayhawks, a Division II program, had their way, making the long bus ride home an enjoyable one.

“It’s the best I’ve ever been on,” Wells said with a laugh.

The visitors dominated from the opening tip.

Sparked by eight points from Lynn and six from Rodenbaugh, the Jayhawks led 21-12 after the first quarter, expanded the margin to 46-24 at the break and rolled to the blowout victory.

Wells’ squad pulled down a whopping 57 rebounds, led by Lynn’s 16. Johnson brought down 11 and Rodenbaugh had 10. Haley Hettenbaugh dished out 10 assists, and Rodenbaugh and Taylor Phelps each had six.

“Everybody came in and just played their tails off today,” Wells said. “It was fun.”

Adding to the enjoyment is the knowledge that Wells’ program is off to a 6-0 start, heading into Wednesday’s non-conference Division 2 road matchup with Lakeland CC.
