Jayhawks To Play For 7th Place Today

ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Jamestown Community College volleyball team will play for seventh place this afternoon at the NJCAA Division III Championship.

If the Jayhawks had been able to finish off their first set against Lorain CC on Friday at the UCR Regional Sports Center, they might be playing for fifth place instead.

“We were up 22-16 in the first set and gave back that lead,” Jamestown CC coach Ashley Lund said. “That kind of took the wind out of our sails.”

Ultimately, the Jayhawks lost, 25-23, 25-17, 25-16, setting up today’s 1 p.m. (EST) match against Queensborough, which they beat in last year’s seventh-place meeting.

“Actually, they were totally beatable,” Lund said of Lorain. “They were a team we should have taken a couple sets. Would we have won the game? I don’t know.”

Statistically, Jamestown CC was led by Sierra Wells, who had two aces, 35 assists, one kill, 10 digs and one block. Jenna Caskey had one ace, 11 kills, nine digs and one block; Kaylin Brumagin had 10 kills and one block; Megan Dominiak had four kills and five blocks; Kendyl Austin had one ace, eight kills, three digs, and two blocks; and Cameryn Hawkins had one ace and 20 digs.

The Jayhawks (27-4) will look to rebound this afternoon.

“I reminded them when we got done playing that we just need to come out (today) and take that seven,” Lund said. “We’re competely capable of that.”
