Anderson Inducted Into YSU HOF

Bethany Anderson (Jamestown/Southwestern) was inducted into the Youngstown University Hall of Fame at the 34th annual banquet on Oct. 27. A 2008 YSU graduate and 2004 graduate of Southwestern Central School, Anderson ended her track and field career as one of the most decorated athletes in Penguins’ history.

In her first freshman indoor season, Anderson was named the Field Newcomer of the Year at the Horizon League Championship after winning the shotput. In her first outdoor season, Anderson won another Newcomer award after picking up another win in the shotput.

Anderson’s sophomore season would begin with a sweep of the throws at the Horizon Championship, and include an Outstanding Field Performer honor at the conclusion of the outdoor season.

In 2006-07, Anderson was voted the Horizon League Indoor Athlete of the Year by the league’s coaches, and was also named Outstanding Field Performer after another indoor sweep of the throws.

At the conclusion of her outdoor season as a junior, Anderson was named Youngstown’s Female Athlete of the Year after claiming both the shotput and hammer throw league titles, becoming the first three-time shotput champion in Horizon history.

In her final year with the Penguins, Anderson was named the Horizon Women’s Indoor Athlete of the Year for the second straight time, claiming the top spot in the weight throw for the third straight year with a school-record toss of 63-10¢.

In her last outdoor season, Anderson became a three-time Horizon champion in the hammer throw with a league record mark of 182-5 while taking second in the shot and second in the discus.

Her career achievements now include: indoor school records in the shot and the weight throw … school outdoor records in the shot and the hammer throw … Horizon League records in the indoor shot, weight throw and hammer. … five indoor titles … and a four-time NCAA Mideast Regional qualifier.

Anderson graduated with a degree in physical education and health education and also holds a degree in health promotion and education from the University of Cincinnati. She currently works and lives in the Jamestown area.

Pippy Gerace (Jamestown) and the Cornell University women’s hockey team are off to a 4-1-2 start and a 3-1 mark against ECAC opponents.

The Big Red played Mercyhurst to a 4-4 tie on Saturday and a 0-0 tie on Sunday.

Gerace scored the first goal of the day on Saturday, her third of the season.

Cornell will travel to Quinnipiac on Friday and Princeton on Saturday.

Chrisanna Green (Jamestown/Jamestown) and the Virginia State University women’s basketball team are off to a 3-1 start after picking up an 88-71 win over Paine College on Monday.

Green posted a team-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, three assists and a steal in the win.

The Trojans will travel to meet University of Puerto Rico Bayamon in Raleigh, North Carolina on Friday.

Abi Bailey (Sinclairville/Panama) is off to a promising start in her first season with the Roberts Wesleyan women’s swim team.

On Friday, Nov. 2 in a meet against Erie Community College Bailey claimed first in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.37 while also taking first in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:05.93.

Bailey so took first in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:08.97.

In her most recent meet against Herkimer County Community College, Bailey took second in the 50-yard free (28.71), second in the backstroke (2:34.17), and second in the 400-yard medley relay (4:44.79).

The Redhawks are off until Dec. 1, when they will travel to Wells College.

The Hutchinson County Community College men’s basketball team and sophomore James Rojas (Jamestown/Jamestown) are off to a 5-0 start after a 117-85 win over Redlands Community College on Saturday.

Rojas led the Blue Dragons with 28 points and six rebounds while adding two steals, one block and one assist.

The team will next host Murray State on Friday.
