YMCA Jets Swim Team Holding Tryouts

The Jamestown Jets began their 87th season as Jamestown’s leading competitive swim program on Sept. 17.

The Jets are locally based and comprised of swimmers from 10 school districts in Chautauqua County and Pennsylvania. Swimmers range from first time on a swim team to state and national qualifiers. The Jets invite all swimmers 5-18 years of age who are able to swim a length of the pool front crawl and backstroke to try the Jets for two weeks with no commitment.

“We are very excited this season,” coach Jason Chinni said. “We have made some changes to our program and we look forward to seeing the benefits. Luckily even with recent local pool problems our swimmers have been able to practice continually and have not had to miss any water time.”

Chinni is entering his 13th season as Jets head coach and the YMCA’s aquatic director.

New participants are invited to try out for the swim team during any of these practice times at the Jamestown YMCA. Swimmers first day will take about 30 minutes they will then be assigned practice times: Monday 4-6 p.m., Tuesday 4-5:30 p.m., Wednesday 4-5 p.m., Thursday 4-6 p.m., and Friday 3:30-6:30 p.m.

All swimmers will be expected to participate in a minimum of two practices per week and will have five practice times per week available.

The Jets compete in the North Western PA YMCA Swim League and have approximately seven league meets per season, plus championships. All league meet and post season meet fees are included in the registration fee. Meets are held from late October through mid-March at home and away locations. Emphasis will be on stroke technique, conditioning, and endurance. Other fun activities are scheduled throughout the season. Scholarships and multiple swimmer discounts are available.
