RANDOLPH — Gage VanRensselaer entered Thursday’s Section VI Class C boys soccer quarterfinal with four goals on the season.

The junior forward added two goals to that total and in the process helped No. 3 Randolph move into the semifinals with a 3-0 win over No. 6 Chautauqua Lake.

“That’s a huge confidence boost,” Randolph coach Dave Levandowski said of VanRensselaer’s afternoon. “When he got the second one, you could see how excited he was to have as big of an impact on the game as he did.”

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead 35 minutes into the first half when Kaleb Steward scored his 10th of the season off an assist from Ty Rosengren.

Just two minutes later, VanRensselaer scored his fifth of the season from Kameron Finch to give the hosts a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

“It’s nice to have a two-goal cushion, but a two-goal lead is a tough one,” Levandowski said. “It’s important that the guys came out in the second half and played hard.”

VanRensselaer wasn’t done there, adding his second of the game from Bryson Rozler in the 65th minute to give Randolph its final cushion.

“I thought our back line did a fantastic job in the second half,” Levandowski said. “They may have had one really good chance in the second half. We did a good job of slowing them down, especially once they started pushing late.”

Jacob Bulich made four saves in net for the shutout.

Eric Peterson made seven saves for the Thunderbirds.
