Boggs Tosses 5 TDs; Rodriguez Scores 5 Times In Raiders’ 62-26 Rout

Drew Boggs had a Senior Night to remember.

Fran Rodriguez did, too.

And together, along with the rest of the Jamestown High School football team, began their homecoming weekend buoyed by the knowledge that they have reserved a date for the Section VI Class A playoffs later this month.

On Red Raiders.

Unofficially, Boggs completed 13 of 16 passes for 317 yards and five touchdowns, including three to Rodriguez; Rodriguez also ran for two more scores; Takye Branch ran for one; Elijah Rojas caught a pair of scoring strikes; and Tyler Eganski returned a punt for yet another TD as the Red Raiders blitzed Frontier, 62-26, in a Class A-1 game on a crisp, cool Friday night at Strider Field.

Jamestown’s Fran Rodriguez dives into the end zone ahead of a Frontier tackler during Friday’s Class A-1 matchup at Strider Field.

Boggs, though, was as hot as could be.

In the first half alone, he connected on 11 of 12 passes– the one incompletion was the result of a drop — for 261 yards and TD strikes of 60 and 38 yards to Rodriguez, and 40 and 21 yards to Rojas, the latter score coming with 7.3 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give Jamestown a 34-20 lead.

For good measure, the 6-foot-3, 210-pounder tossed another beautiful long ball — this one from 49 yards — that hit Rodriguez in stride for yet another score early in the fourth quarter.

“Normally, you run to set up the pass, but sometimes you’ve got to pass to set up the run,” Boggs said. “Future teams have to look out for it, Frontier had to look out for it and we just kept going back to it.”

For historical perspective, Boggs’ five TD throws are the second-most in a single game in school history — tied with Jake Sisson (2013) and Nikk Holland (2014); and one off the school mark, also held by Sisson, who accomplished it in his legendary 2013 campaign. Boggs’ passing yards, meanwhile, are sixth most in the history of the program.

“It’s not bad,” Boggs said with a smile. “My first pass on this field was an interception as a jayvee. My first pass tonight was a touchdown. I’d like to think I finished well.”

The win improved Jamestown’s record to 3-3 overall, 3-2 in Class A and a likely No. 8 playoff seed.

“We had to win by 17 points at a minimum,” Red Raiders coach Tom Langworthy said. “Williamsville East won by over 20, so we really had to push that. That’s why we had to score those points (in the fourth quarter).”

Early in the first half, though, the Falcons (0-6, 0-4) were giving the Red Raiders’ defense all they could handle.

In fact, the visitors matched Jamestown touchdown for touchdown in the first quarter, courtesy of a 73-yard run by Max Fleming and a 68-yard jaunt by Hayden Carter. By intermission, Frontier, which also received a 1-yard TD sneak by quarterback Brennen Kilcoyne, had amassed nearly 240 yards rushing.

That ground assault didn’t continue in the final two periods, however, as the Red Raiders buttoned up their defensive assignments. And as their offense continued to score, it forced the Falcons to go to the air with little success. In fact, the only touchdown the visitors managed in the second half came on Kilcoyne’s 16-yard pass to Tyler Bailey in the third quarter.

“I was happy with how our defense responded in the second half,” Langworthy said. “Our offense kept us in it for a while and then our defense buckled down and we were able to separate … which was important.”

Meanwhile, Jamestown found paydirt on Eganski’s 37-yard punt return in the third quarter; and on 6- and 7-yard runs, and a 49-yard reception, all by Rodriguez in the final period.

“My main motivation was to go the playoffs,” Rodriguez said. “I wouldn’t have had five touchdowns if my teammates didn’t do their assignments. … Today, we’re moving forward and looking to the next game.”

When the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Red Raider marching band played the school fight song for one last time.

On a beautiful fall night for football, it had plenty of opportunity to practice it.

NOTES: Rodriguez finished with five receptions for 167 yards and rushed for 42 more; Peyton Olson ran for 90 yards on 14 carries; and Jeff Seager caught six passes for 89 yards. … Defensively, Olson (10 tackles, four assists, two tackles for loss), Skylar Myers (six tackles, three assists, two tackles for loss), Taige White (five tackles, three assists), Branch (five tackles three assists, two tackles for loss) and Grant Moore (five tackles, two assists, two tackles for loss) led the way for Jamestown. … Jayden Schultz was successful on six point-after touchdown kicks. … The Red Raiders return to action a week from today when they travel to All High Stadium in Buffalo to meet McKinley in a non-league game. Kickoff is 1 p.m. … An anticipated bonus for the Red Raiders next week, Langworthy said, is the return, on a limited basis, of running back/defensive end Savon VanSickle. Injured eight plays into the first game, the talented sophomore should provide the Red Raiders with a boost for the rest of the season.
