Longtime Salamanca Coach To Be Honored In March

SALAMANCA — The Basketball Coaches Association of New York recently announced that Pete Weishan, current boys junior varsity basketball coach and longtime varsity basketball coach at Salamanca, will be inducted to the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in March of 2019.

Induction into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame is one of the highest honors that a basketball coach in the state can receive.

Weishan, who is entering his 44th consecutive year of coaching, served as varsity boys basketball coach from 1975 to 2008, winning 366 games, eight league titles, and making seven appearances in the Section VI final. He also served for five seasons as girls varsity basketball coach, winning 57 games and making an appearance in the Section VI, Class C final.

In total, Coach Weishan has won 473 games as a varsity and junior varsity head coach.

He’s a member of the Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame, and past recipient of the Olean Times Herald Big 30 Basketball Coach of the Year. Coach Weishan also served as athletics director at Salamanca from 1983-2008.

“For four decades, Coach Weishan has represented our school district and community with class and integrity,” said Adam Bennett, current boys varsity basketball coach. “We are thrilled that he will be inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame. He’s an incredible basketball coach, and an even better person who has had a positive impact on the lives of thousands of students in Salamanca.”
