Gens Wins Singles Crown; Swanson-Hayes Take Doubles

LAKEWOOD — Fredonia’s Bernadette Gens wrapped up the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association girls tennis singles title and the No. 1 seed at next week’s Section VI tennis championships with a three-set victory over teammate Alicia Kluck on Friday afternoon at the Lakewood Family YMCA.

Gens beat Kluck, 6-1, in the first set before her teammate came back for a 6-2 second-set victory. In the third-and-deciding set, Gens prevailed, 6-4, to earn the top seed and make Kluck the CCAA No. 2 seed.

Gens advanced to the final by beating Chautauqua Lake’s Emily Bauer, 6-3, 6-3, in the semifinals while Kluck advanced by virtue of a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jamestown’s CeCe Eklum in the other semifinal.

Bauer beat Eklum, 7-6 with a 7-4 tie-breaker, 2-6, 6-4, in the consolation match to wrap up the CCAA’s No. 3 seed next week while Eklum will enter sectionals as the CCAA No. 4 seed.

In the doubles final, Maple Grove’s Elise Swanson and Jenna Hayes beat Falconer’s Macy Youngberg and Nicole Youngberg, 6-3, 6-2, in the finals to earn the CCAA No. 1 seed.

Swanson and Hayes beat Olean’s Maggie Waugh and Mackenzie Windus, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2, in the semifinals while the Youngbergs — next week’s CCAA No. 2 seed — beat Southwestern’s Hiba Munir and Elizabeth Kane, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.

In the consolation match, Waugh and Windus earned the No. 3 seed with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Munir and Kane, who will enter next week’s sectionals as the CCAA No. 4 seed.

The Section VI Championships will begin next Friday, Oct. 19, at noon at the Lakewood Family YMCA. Action will wrap up Saturday, Oct. 20, beginning at 3 p.m.

This year’s state championships will take place Saturday, Oct. 27 through Monday, Oct. 29 at the Tri-City Tennis Center in Latham.
