Anthony Amroski placed first in the 26th annual Daniel W. Feather Memorial 5K, which began and ended on Baker Street in Jamestown on Sunday morning.

The Cecil, Pennsylvania resident toured the course in 17:08, 40 seconds faster than 16-year-old Bryce Baglia of Falconer, who posted a time of 17:48.

Rounding out the top five were Gavin Ingrao of Angola, 19:22; Zachariah Nelson of Elkridge, Maryland, 19:24; and Adam Rowe of Ripley, 19:31.

Leading the way for the women was Brooke Adams of Randolph, whose time of 20:00, was good for seventh overall. Katie Zwald of Jamestown was second among the women, and 10th overall, with a time of 20:57.

Feather had a lifelong interest in running, which led him to the New York State and International Police Olympics, where he earned numerous gold and silver medals. For several years, he also participated successfully in area triathlons. The recipient of the Chautauqua County Gold Achievement Award for personal fitness, Feather was also selected as one of Jamestown Community College’s 50 greatest athletes, and was inducted posthumously into the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame on Feb. 18, 1993.

Feather became a Jamestown police officer on March 4, 1974, and served as such until his death on May 12, 1992, after suffering a brain aneurysm while riding his bike, training for an upcoming time trial.

Along with Ron Graham, Feather co-founded the Chautauqua Striders in 1979, and served as a volunteer coach for several years. Since its inception, Chautauqua Striders has grown tremendously. Last year, more than 1,100 students were involved in various before- and after-school programs. These students took advantage of many services provided by the organization, including PSAT/SAT workshops; outreach assistance; athletic-related activities; and participation in the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympics.

All proceeds from Sunday’s race, which is part of the UPMC Chautauqua Runner of the Year Series, go to the Chautauqua Striders Track Club and to a college scholarship for a local track and field athlete in Feather’s memory.
