Ward, Michael Peppy, Crist Highlight Day 1 Of Championship

NIAGARA FALLS — Maple Grove’s Michael Peppy will be heading to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Track and Field Championships after taking second place in the 3,200 meters with a time of 9:44.8 at the Section VI Championships at Niagara Falls High School on Friday.

Peppy finished just behind East Aurora’s Ian Russ, and will enter today’s 1,600-meter final as the No. 1 seed while Southwestern’s Eddie Scroxton holds the No. 2 seed.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Rachael Ward was able to earn an individual Section VI title in the pole vault with a mark of 10 feet, 6 inches.

In the girls triple jump, Frewsburg’s Maddie Sohl took home third place with a mark of 35-7 while Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Sam Gilbert grabbed fourth with a distance of 34-9.

Gilbert will look to improve on that performance today as she enters the finals of the 100 meters, 200 meters as well as the long jump.

The girls 3,000-meter run saw Bailey Gostomski take third, while Maple Grove’s Christina Peppy finished in fourth.

After three events in the pentathlon, Maple Grove’s Carson Crist leads the way with 1,904 points after taking the 110-meter hurdles in 16.49, the high jump with a mark of 5-11.75, and the shot put with a throw of 37-10.

No. 1 seed John Swabik of Clymer/Sherman/Panama is currently in second place behind Crist, with his best event, the 1,500 meters, still to come.
