Morrison Wins First Collegiate Start

Bryce Morrison

ITHACA — Twenty-first-ranked Alfred scored the lone points of the second half, rallying from a four-point halftime deficit to claim a 20-17 victory over host Ithaca on Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.

Ithaca led 17-13 at intermission after a 37-yard field goal just before the halftime horn. The score held up until midway through the fourth quarter, when Alfred took over at its own 23-yard line following a punt. The Saxons marched 77 yards in 10 plays, going ahead 20-17 after a 26-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Bryce Morrison (Kennedy/Randolph) to junior wide receiver Jayden Gavidia with 7:51 left in regulation.

Alfred tallied 347 yards of offense with Morrison going 17 of 29 for 239 yards and two touchdowns in his first collegiate start.

“I’m really proud of how Bryce performed in his first start as a Saxon,” Alfred coach Bob Rankl said. “He got hit a few times and never shied away and made some big throws in the second half.”

Alfred is idle next weekend and returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16, when it hosts Empire 8 Conference foe Utica at 1 p.m.

More importantly, it opened with a victory for the longtime assistant coach, as his Fighting Scots prevailed over Lake Erie, 30-3.

Quarterback Jake Sisson (Jamestown/Jamestown) had an effective opening to his senior season, going 20 of 44 for 258 yards and a touchdown along with an interception.

Junior linebacker A.J. Hulton (Westfield/Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake) was in on five tackles, including one for a loss for Edinboro.

The Fighting Tigers, who play their home matches at Cobleskill Golf & Country Club, lost six lettermen to graduation and transfers over the offseason. Entering the fall season, SUNY Cobleskill is ranked fourth overall in the 2017-18 North Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.

“Clearly we are going to do some rebuilding this year with our losses to graduation and transfer but we also have some experienced players returning and some talented newcomers who can help us get to where we want to go,” eighth-year coach Joseph McCarthy said after watching the men’s team’s annual President’s Cup, Ryder-Cup formatted three-day intrasquad competition to open the season.
