Left-Hander Griggs Pitches Jammers Past Elmira In 5-0 Victory

ELMIRA — Backed by a four-run third inning and another superb pitching performance from Bradley Griggs (University of Texas-San Antonio), the Jamestown Jammers cruised to a much-needed 5-0 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League win over the Elmira Pioneers Saturday night in front of a crowd of 2,933 at Dunn Field.

The crucial third inning outburst was keyed by a two-run single from Chris Estrada (UTSA) with the bases loaded that plated both John Conti (Canisius College) and Ben Brookover (UTSA). Alert baserunning following a throwing error on the same play allowed Skyler Valentine (UTSA) to score as well to stake Jamestown (29-13) to an early 3-0 lead. Estrada later scored on an RBI single from Alex O’Donnell (Mercyhurst University) in the same inning to give the Jammers a 4-0 lead.

Armed with an early advantage on the scoreboard, Griggs did what he’s done all summer for the Jammers.

The left-hander ended up hurling 6 1/3 scoreless innings and only gave up three hits while striking out three. The win improved his record on the season to 4-2 and it lowered his ERA to 2.55.

Isaac Meza (CSU Bakersfield) fired the final 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, struck out four and didn’t give up a run, lowering his stellar ERA to 1.88.

Jamestown’s last run came in the seventh, when Brookover crossed the plate on an Elmira error.

Conti, Brookover, and O’Donnell all collected two hits in the victory.

The Jammers, who now hold a 3¢ game lead over second-place Geneva in the West Division, will host the Onondaga Flames today at Diethrick Park. First pitch is slated for 3:05 p.m.
