Three Jayhawks Named To First Team

WNYAC Announces Baseball All-Star Lists

The 2017 Western New York Athletic Conference Division III baseball all-star teams were recently announced and Jamestown Community College was certainly well-represented.

Sophomore Noah Weinstein (Jamestown/Southwestern Central School), freshman Matt Hair (Frewsburg/Frewsburg Central School) and freshman DJ Yates (New London, Ohio/New London High School) were all first-team selections while sophomore Chad Nelson (Jamestown/Jamestown High School), sophomore John White (Warren/Warren Area High School) and sophomore Noah Whalen (Buffalo/Kenmore West Senior High School) were all recognized on the second team.

Weinstein, who saw a predominant amount of playing time behind the plate as the Jayhawks’ catcher, was arguably one of the top hitters throughout the region. In fact, he hit .500 in 24 games and drove in 26 runs. He also collected a total of 38 hits, including six doubles and one triple.

Hair, who saw most of his action at first base, was another one of Jamestown CC’s top hitters with a .367 batting average in 28 games. The former Frewsburg standout drove in 20 runs and had a total of 29 hits.

Yates played in 30 games this spring for the Jayhawks and also turned in an exceptional campaign at the plate, hitting .370 with 30 hits, including three doubles. He drove in 15 runs and had an on-base percentage of .490.

Nelson, a transfer from Niagara County CC, was one of the team’s top pitchers, hurling a total of 43 innings and racking up a team-leading 44 strikeouts.

White did a little bit of everything for the Jayhawks on the diamond, hitting .344 in 20 games with 11 total hits. On the mound, he tossed 48ªinnings, picked up three wins, struck out 26 and had an ERA of 4.44.

Whalen played great defense in the outfield all season long and had a great deal of success offensively. In 31 games, he had a .273 average, had 24 hits and stole seven bases.
