Curtiss H. Taber, 96, of Mount Dora, Fla., formerly of Jamestown, N.Y., passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014.
He was born June 25, 1918, in Cherry Creek, N.Y., to Harry A. Taber and Laura (Curtiss) Taber.
Curtiss was proprietor of Taber and Taber Insurance Agency in Jamestown, N.Y., for 32 years until his retirement in 1978. At that time the third generation continued the business.
After high school, he attended the University of Illinois. In 1941, he joined the U.S. Navy as a newly commissioned Ensign. In 1946, Curtiss was released from active duty in the U.S. Navy as a World War II veteran and joined the U.S. Naval Air Reserve.
In 1946, Curtiss moved back to Jamestown. During his time in Jamestown he attended the First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon for several years, usher and head usher. He became very active in the American Legion, and the Jamestown Kiwanis Club, serving as president of Kiwanis, where he worked on various fundraisers. He was involved with the local board of independent agents and served on the board of directors for the Independent Insurance Agents Association of New York (IIAANY) and served as vice president of Western New York Region of the IIAANY.
After retirement, Curtiss and Lynette moved to Leesburg, Fla., where they continued their love of cards and golf, and joined the Silver Lake Golf and Country Club. He was a volunteer driver for Hospice of Lake County for several years, driving Hospice patients to doctor's appointments and sitting with them. Lynette passed away in 1999 and in 2004 he moved into Waterman Village in Mt. Dora, Fla., where he served on the hospitality committee.
He is survived by daughter, Patricia T. (late Jack) Peppers of Fruitland Park, Fla.; son, Robert C. (Barbra) Taber of Jamestown, N.Y.; grandchildren: Curtiss A. Peppers, Holly L. Peppers, Philip (Tonya) Taber, Jonathan (Nanette) Taber, Jessica (Chris) Fronzack and Paul (Cassie) Taber; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Lynette; son-in-law, Jack Peppers; and sister, Phyllis Kades.
Funeral service will be held Aug. 1, 2014, at 10 a.m., in The Garden of Life Fellowship Chapel at Waterman Village, Mt. Dora. Chaplain Alan Jones will officiate.
Interment will be in Pine Level Cemetery, Oxford, Fla.
