Downtown Jamestown will soon be running red with contestants' entries in the third annual Great Jamestown Sauce Off competition.
On Sunday, several area contestants will gather at the Winter Garden Plaza from 1-4 p.m. to present their finest red sauce recipes to a panel of judges and area residents wishing to have a taste for themselves.
Sponsored by Jamestown Now and Jamestown Renaissance Corporation, the Great Jamestown Sauce Off is open to any and all area residents wishing to put their red sauce recipes to the test. Red sauces may either be meat or vegetarian, and can be submitted to represent an individual, family or restaurant.

According to Vanessa Weinert, Jamestown Now committee member, the Sauce Off is intended to provide the community with an event that plays to some of the strengths of its heritage.
"We wanted to hold an event that showcases something that we do well, which is red sauce," Weinert said. "In the Jamestown community, we have a lot people with Swedish and Italian backgrounds that are good at making that."
Weinert said community response to the Great Jamestown Sauce Off has been warm in the first two years, with 12 contestants registering the first year and 20 in the second. She added that approximately 100 other residents came out to try the sauces, and the hope is for that number to increase this year.

"We're hoping to see 200 people come down," she said. "That would be a great turnout. And we're still looking for people to register. People can even show up to register at the last minute if they want; we'll take entries up until the day of."
Weinert said the family-friendly event will feature a crafts table for children, sponsored by Michael's, and Forte is donating pasta and bread to accompany the sauce-tasting. This year will also feature live music provided by The New Tenants, comprised of Emily Strong, Molly Strong and Kyle Gustafson.
Three winning sauce recipes will be selected from the competing entries.
First-prize winners in the meat and vegetarian categories will be determined by a panel of judges consisting of: Pati Centi, owner of Landmark and Watermark restaurants; Brian Cibo, owner of Cibo; Peggy Kaltenmeier, owner of Forte; Jason Sample, of WRFA; and Rochelle Mole, proclaimed "sauce cook extraordinaire." The first-place winners will receive a $100 cash prize and a corresponding trophy. Judges will sample all entries and vote for their favorite at 3 p.m.
There will also be a prize awarded for fan favorite. Patrons of the event will cast their votes throughout the day for their favorite recipe. The fan favorite will receive a special award and a $50 cash prize.
