Chautauqua County Executive Gregory Edwards recently visited 17 offices throughout Jamestown, Celoron, Falconer and Mayville, giving thanks to the employees who work hard to keep facilities running.
He said this was the county's way to acknowledge the employees who don't get recognition otherwise for all the hard work that they do. Edwards went on to say most citizens know the leaders on a town, county, state and federal level due to their exposure to them, but not the workers who toil behind the scenes.
"You guys do your work so well people don't even know you are here," Edwards said to the county employees. "I really have enjoyed my work here, and the things you guys do."
"I always knew I would be in a helping position," said Linda Shields, a 30-year employee at the Department of Probation.
In her speech after receiving a pin and certificate for work for the county for 30 years, Shields said she knew she wanted to be a probation officer since high school.
The county employees who were honored belonged to the: South and Center Chautauqua Lake Sewer District, Chautauqua County Landfill, Jamestown Airport, Office of Information Technology, Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Probation, Department of Health and Human Services, Buildings and Grounds in Jamestown, Department of Mental Hygiene, Veterans Service Agency and Office for the Aging, Department of Planning and Economic Development, Chautauqua Area Regional Transit System, South County Transfer Station, Department of Public Facilities, Department of Public Facilities building in Falconer, and Buildings and Grounds in Mayville.
In addition to $5 gift certificate courtesy of Wing City Grille and a flashlight/can opener, employees at the five-, 10-, 20- and 30-year landmarks of employment received certificates, and those after five years received pins.
