SYRACUSE - The inaugural poll of the high school football season was released by the New York State Sportswriters Association on Tuesday and, in news that should surprise no one, the Randolph Cardinals sit atop the list in Class D.
The Cardinals, defending state champions, have certainly played like the state's best squad so far.
Winners of 12 straight games dating back to last season, Brent Brown's crew has been every bit as dangerous as expected. Not only has the offensive unit averaged 47 points per game - scoring touchdowns in each of their 11 possessions thus far - but the defense has been particularly stingy as well, having allowed only seven points.
In his first year as head coach, Brent Brown has the Randolph Cardinals, the defending state Class D football champions, off to another great start in 2013.

Most recently, Randolph blanked Ellicottville/West Valley, 50-0, tallying 42 of those points in the first half alone.
Lurking not too far behind is Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake, which is ranked No. 3 in Class D after posting wins in each of its first two contests.
Class DD-newcomer Cattaraugus-Little Valley (2-0) comes in at No. 17.
Jamestown's high-powered offense, led by Jake Sisson, Western New York's most prolific passer (just check the stats; specifically, his record-breaking 508-yard performance last Saturday in a win over Kenmore West), is No. 19 in Class AA.
The Red Raiders sport a 2-0 record, and are hoping to make it 3-0 this week at All-High Stadium against non-league foe South Park on Friday night.
The only other Class AA team from Section 6 to make the rankings is Lockport (2-0) at No. 24.
Rounding out the locally ranked teams is Fredonia (2-0). The Hillbillies are No. 11 in Class C.
Also released were the boys soccer rankings, and the only two area teams to make the cut - at least so far - were Randolph and North Collins.
Randolph, which through its first six games has posted a 4-0-2 overall record, is No. 13 in Class C, while North Collins, which is 4-1-0, is No. 7 for Class D.
