Sometime Soon...

January 24, 2014 - Dave Hecei
mini 2012Ok, this is fully a rumor. There should be a new Mac mini coming in the next few weeks. The Mac Mini is Apple's lowest priced Macintosh housed in a very compact aluminum enclosure. All of Apple's other desktops and laptops have been updated recently, except for the mini. It is very overdue.

A few days ago, a Belgium retailer leaked a placeholder on their website for a new Haswell based mini. Supposedly a customer asked the retailer about a new mini and was told they expect them by the end of February. While this is not proof that a new mini is imminent, the idea of an updated mini has created a buzz on the Internet.

If we do get a new Haswell mini next month, the update should include faster graphics, lower power consumption, and a bump in speed. Other possibilities include Thunderbolt 2, and PCI-e based SSD.

Pricing traditionally doesn't change on most Mac updates. The current mini starts at $599 with a 2.5GHz Core i5 processor, and $799 with a Core i7 running at 2.3GHz. Apple also has a server model priced at $999 with a Core i7 and dual 1TB hard drives.
