Back To The Stone Age

(A brief break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday rush for another memory jog …)

On one of our weekend trips to Cleveland to catch The Tribe, Sally and I got into a discussion of Saturday morning cartoon programs/characters, leading into talk of the first primetime animated series premiering in 1960, airing Fridays, 8 p.m. on ABC. It featured the antics of two Stone Age families, the “technology” of their time, and how they lived during their fairly “modern” Prehistoric Age. It was almost like an animated, Stone Age Honeymooners, aping similar characters, slapstick, and comedic antics of Jackie Gleason’s hit show which aired in the 50s/60s.

The series I’m speaking of is, of course, “The Flintstones,” and in our discussion of this program, we both quizzed each other about episodes, songs, characters. It got to be that we remembered much about the six year run of the program, still featured in syndication and in the archives of The Cartoon Network and Boomerang Kids’ Shows Channel.

Our tossing of Flintstone questions was pretty rapid fire for a bit, and in one of our lulls to think up more, Sally told me that this could be another Voice from the Bullpen quiz readers might enjoy. Thinking to myself that a cartoon show might not be the best of topics, I suddenly realized that all people my age were only seven years old (or so) when the Flintstones debuted, so all of us in our late fifties and early to mid-sixties might do fairly well with this topic. [Besides, Sally hasn’t steered me wrong with any of her suggestions, whether (out of my stubbornness) I wanted to listen to them or not, so I don’t think I’m going to stop listening to her advice anytime soon, but please don’t tell her I said that.]

So grab pencils, paper, and/or your “Voice from the Bullpen” quiz books, and let’s travel back in time … back to the Stone Age, and see what we remember about “The Flintstones.”

.)     Many might remember The Flintstones theme song “Meet the Flintstones,” but that theme didn’t come along until the third episode of Season 3.  What was the name of the original Flintstones theme song?

.)    Where was Fred employed?

.)    What was Wilma’s maiden name?

.)    Name the song which made Pebbles and Bamm Bamm singing stars.

.)     Name the song that the character (hired by Fred so he and Barney could rehearse for a chance to play the Hollyrock Bowl with a Hollyrock Star, who was actually the babysitter, unrecognized by Fred and Barney) sang to Pebbles to get her to go to sleep?

.)    Who was the actress/singer who lent the voice to that babysitter?

.)    What was the character name of that babysitter?

.)    What was the name of the Martian whose spaceship crashed in the city where Fred and Barney lived, forcing the Martian to stay until he did enough good deeds to get back to his home planet?

.)    Who provided the voice for this diminutive Martian?

.)    What was the name of the Flintstones’ pet?

.)    Around the time of the airing of TV’s Addams Family, a spooky family moved into the same neighborhood as the Flintstones?  What was the family name of this odd clan?

.)    What was the name of this odd family’s husband and wife?

.)     Name the town where the Flintstones and Rubbles lived.

.)     Name the dance created by character musician/singer Rock Roll, whom Fred filled in for   when Roll ate pickled dodo bird eggs, which he was highly allergic to, and lost his voice, in a performance for Wilma’s Women’s Club.

.)     What did Wilma use as a vacuum cleaner?

.)     What helped Fred regain his Bowling form?

.)     Who was the singer/actor who lent his voice to a “guest star” character who was to sing for a surfing competition, but was disguised by his agent as a lifeguard, and ended up saving Fred numerous times when he was showing off to the teenagers?

.)     What was the name of Fred’s uncle who would leave him his fortune if Fred could spend a night alone in his huge haunted mansion?

.)     Name the music group which hit town and caused a scare that aliens were invading their community, and Fred got caught up as one of them while walking to a costume party dressed similarly to their performing outfits.

.)     Name Fred and Barney’s lodge.

.)     Name the real music group of the 60s who recorded probably their best hit in 1964, titled “Last Laugh” performed on a television show of that decade called Shindig.

.)     That hit song (#21) was voiced by them on an episode of The Flintstones, but the name of their group was changed to fit the Stone Age era.  What was the group’s name on The Flintstones?

.)     Where did this group sing “Last Laugh” on that episode of The Flintstones?

.)     Name the voice of Fred Flintstone.

.)     Name the voice of Wilma Flintstone.

.)     Name the voice of Barney Rubble.

.)     Name the voice of Betty Rubble.

.)     What television show did the answer to #27 star in during the decade of the 60s, playing a widow with three daughters and operating a rustic, out of the way hotel?

.)     Who sold Fred the piano he gave Wilma for their anniversary?

.)     Who helped Fred and Barney write a hit song?

.)     What did Fred use for an “electric” razor?

.)     Name the character that Fred suspected killed his wife and had her body in a trunk.

.)     Name the mystery writer/director this character was patterned after?

Well there it is, the latest Voice from the Bullpen quiz of totally useless information, but some of you will admit it brought back memories of being a kid and what television had to offer. Hope you enjoyed this latest test of trivia from the VFTB.  Thanks, Sally for suggesting it and helping me remember much about The Flintstones. Yabba Dabba Doo!!
