Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Is Just What The Doctor Ordered For County

Thousands of Chautauqua County residents want to get COVID-19 a COVID-19 vaccine judging from the response to two items in the news last week.

The first was an NBC News report that state officials had convinced the federal government to move a vaccine clinic from Chautauqua County to a bigger city because the bigger city allowed for a “more equitable” distribution of vaccine than Chautauqua County would.

The second was news that the State University at Fredonia and Jamestown Community College would be sites of Chautauqua County vaccine clinics — but registration for those two sites filled up in minutes.

Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, said later in the week that he expects a federal clinic to make its way to Chautauqua County in the near future. That’s welcome news for county residents. But an even more welcome bit of news would be additional vaccine doses making their way to Chautauqua County in the first place. In that vein, the FDA endorsement of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine is welcome news. A third approved vaccination will help get doses into counties that have been underserved to this point in the vaccine rollout, and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine comes as a single dose and is easy to ship and store.

It’s encouraging that Chautauqua County is on the radar for COVID vaccine clinics. But we need the available doses to make those clinics successful. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine could be just what the doctor ordered for our county.
