Americans Need A Stimulus Package As Pandemic Continues To Rage

When we endorsed Rep. Tom Reed for re-election in late October, this is what we wanted to see.

The Problem Solvers Caucus had made dozens of proposals over the years, but had precious little to show for it. A month after the November election, however, the caucus may have made its biggest mark on Washington, D.C.

For starters, the $908 billion proposal pieced together by Reed, Rep. Josh Gottheimer and the rest of the Problem Solvers actually moved enough of their fellow legislators to prompt a phone call between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, no small feat.

“In the spirit of compromise we believe the bipartisan framework introduced by Senators yesterday should be used as the basis for immediate bipartisan, bicameral negotiations,” Pelosi and Schumer said, according to the Associated Press. They said they would try to build upon the approach, which has support in the House from the bipartisan “problem solvers” coalition.

Americans need a stimlus package as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on. It’s encouraging to see Reed, through the Problem Solvers caucus, carry a workable goal toward the finish line.
