Conversations Still Required On Cell Tower Placement

Cell towers are the 21st century’s version of landfills and sewers treatment facilities — they’re vitally important to the way we live, but no one wants to live next to one.

Lakewood has been embroiled in a legal battle over a proposed Blue Wireless cell phone tower inside the village. Residents of Jamestown’s south side are similarly upset with a tower proposed by Verizon Wireless on a property adjacent to Hillcrest Baptist Church on Hallock Street. Neighbors worry about property values and setting a precedent by allowing zoning variances in residential neighborhoods.

The rights of homeowners have to be taken into consideration when locating cell towers. Businesses have rights as well — and many in the Jamestown area suffer from a lack of wireless service. Demand for wireless networks is only going to grow, and the need for locations to place cell towers will only grow with it. It’s too early to make a determination if the Hallock Street site is appropriate or not. We encourage those in the neighborhood concerned over the proposal to attend the Zoning Board of Appeals meeting at 3:30 p.m. June 28 to hear from both sides.

We may not have enough information to know if Hallock Street is the best place for a cell tower, but we are certain of one thing: the Zoning Board of Appeals will have its work cut out for it.
