JPS Changes Should Wait For New Superintendent

It was recently suggested to Jamestown Public Schools board members to add eight positions to the district’s payroll as part of the 2017-18 budget.

The budget, as presented, does not increase the tax levy. And it is entirely possible to have additional state aid money that the district doesn’t yet have in its budget once the state budget is finalized.

In addition to the suggested new positions, Sylvia Root, interim district superintendent, suggested the middle schools change from a “junior high” concept to a “middle school” concept, meaning the students would be placed on a “team,” which would keep the same students in the same classes. Root said this type of system would allow teachers to have better relationships with the students and is something the teachers are interested in trying.

All of those suggestions may be fine and good, but perhaps now is the time to make the trains run on time rather than make transformational change to the district. Board members are looking for a new superintendent who will have a different way of thinking than did former superintendent Tim Mains or Ms. Root. It would not be wise to make changes now that prevent the incoming superintendent from making changes he or she wants to make.
