Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

Thumbs up to all those who have done not only kept their sidewalks cleared through these last two lake effect snow storms, but who have done a little extra and helped their neighbors keep theirs clear as well. While it is a homeowner’s responsibility to keep sidewalks clear of ice and snow, some homeowners are elderly and are unable to shovel or snowblow; some are ill and physically incapable of doing so. Thumbs up to all who take the time and effort to help their neighbors during these lake effect snow blasts.

Thumbs up to a fitting tribute to the late Alverna Holmlund of Frewsburg. On Wednesday, Frewsburg-area ministers will host a Blue Christmas service. While open to the general public, the service is put together for those who are suffering from feelings of loss, the passing of friends and members of a family, major disappointments, stress, financial fall-out or depression. After the service, which will be at 7 p.m. at the Kiantone Congregational Church, hot fudge sundaes will be served in memory of Holmlund. The Rev. Mel McGinnis wrote that Holmlund lived a long, active and faithful life in service to God, church, family and community and, before she passed away, requested everyone who attended her memorial service go to the church fellowship hall and have a hot fudge sundae. The sundaes to be served after Wednesday’s service are a nod in remembrance of Holmlund. Kudos, Rev. McGinnis, for a wonderful tribute during this holiday season.

Thumbs up to Judy Wroda, a photographer and artist from Ashville who recently had a photo she took of weekend sleigh rides at Chautauqua Institution published in “Country” magazine. “I couldn’t believe it when I saw it; it took my breath away,” she said. “It was also special because I was at the point where I had been fighting cancer for a while and I just needed something good to happen,” Wroda told The Post-Journal’s Gavin Paterniti recently. Wroda is just the latest reminder of the wonderful artists who call Chautauqua County home. Congratulations, Ms. Wroda, for persevering and pursuing your art.
