Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

Thumbs up to the Audubon Community Nature Center. The agency, formerly known as the Jamestown Audubon Nature Center and Sanctuary, recently unveiled a new name to go along with recognition of its expanding footprint into northern Chautauqua County and Warren County, Pa. In the last year, received funding from the Sheldon Foundation to create a new constituent management program which will be the first of its kind in the area. The Chautauqua and Warren county area has much natural beauty. Now, it has an organization devoted to helping area residents understand and connect with all of it.

Thumbs down to a bad situation in which, luckily, no one was hurt. Last week, Jamestown police saw a vehicle parked on the wrong side of the street with a man and four juveniles inside. The man was reportedly found in possession of a small amount of drugs and loaded 9mm handgun within reach of the four youths. The gun was later found to have been stolen from a Sherman residence about five years ago. It is only through blind luck or divine providence such carelessness with a gun didn’t end up hurting someone.

Thumbs up to a Cassadaga native’s career in the U.S. Air Force. After 23 years in the United States Air Force, Major Jerald Lee Hallett retired recently. During his military career Hallett earned many awards and commendations, including the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal and the 2014 Southeast Region Field Grade Officer of the Year. Hallett, who now lives in Vancouver, Wash., is the son of Ranee and Bruce Kaus of Lily Dale, and Keith and Vicki Hallett of Vancouver, Wash. Kudos to Hallett and his family for their many years of sacrifice for their nation.
