John C. Brown
John C. Brown
John Charles Brown, affectionately known as “Bumpa,” to many, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Nov. 9, 2025, with his beloved wife’s hand in his.
Born on July 11, 1951, John was the son of Ruth C. Brown and the late Charles H. Brown.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Janet Brown (Brinkman); his children Melissa (Mark) Putney and Matthew (Christy) Brown; and his cherished grandchildren Tyler, Emma, Ashton, and Graham Putney, Camryn, Adalyn, and Brody Brown. John is also survived by his mother Ruth Brown, and his siblings Janel (Don) Stormer, Mark (Suzie) Brown, and Mary (Jeff) Carlson, along with many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Charles H. Brown and infant granddaughter, Charlotte J. Putney.
To know Bumpa was to know joy. He had a gift for making people laugh, whether through a perfectly timed dad joke, a playful grin, or a gentle tease that made everyone around him smile. His warmth filled every room he entered. He had a way of putting others first, often thinking about how to brighten someone else’s day before even considering his own. His kindness was found in the small, everyday gestures, a pocket mint offered just when you needed it most, or a dog treat for his beloved “grand-dogs.”
A proud graduate of Panama High School, John went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Education from SUNY Fredonia. His lifelong passion for teaching and leadership touched countless lives throughout his distinguished career in education. He began as a teacher at Pine Valley Elementary School, later serving as the Science Coordinator for E2CCB BOCES, Principal at East Aurora Main Street Elementary School. He also served as President of Phi Delta Kappa during his time at East Aurora and was an active supporter of the East Aurora Educational Foundation. He ended his career as the Superintendent of Cassadaga Valley Central School. John retired in 2011, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, compassion, and excellence.
Faith was a cornerstone of John’s life. Being a devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church for over 40 years, he served the congregation as President, Vice President, Elder, and Sunday School Teacher. He always greeted everyone with a smile as they walked in the door.
Outside of his professional and church life, John was a man of many passions. He was a proud member of the Water Street ping pong club and loved hosting friendly matches at his personally renovated “ping pong house.” He also tended to his 10 acres of grapes with great care, enjoyed birdwatching, and was an avid photographer, always present at local sporting events capturing memories of his grandchildren and community athletes alike.
John’s warmth, humor, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His life was a testament to love, laughter, and faith, leaving a legacy that will live on through the countless lives he touched.
