Derek A. “Rick” DePietro

Derek A. “Rick” DePietro, 66, of Titusville, FL, formerly of Falconer and Jamestown passed away Wednesday (January 25, 2023) at St. Francis Reflections Hospice, after a heroic fight against cancer. Rick was born July 22, 1956 in Jamestown, NY, a son of the late Raymond G. and Sally M. Ognibene DePietro.

He was a graduate of Falconer High School, Jamestown Community College and Rochester Institute of Technology where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Rick began his law enforcement career with Chautauqua Institution and the Village of Falconer Police departments. Subsequently, he was a member of the Jamestown Police Department for 25 years, retiring as a Sergeant. He was proud to serve the citizens of Jamestown as a member of the Street Crimes Unit, the Narcotics Task Force, the Detective Bureau, and as Patrol Sergeant. Rick loved the opportunity to work with middle school students in Jamestown as the first JPD D.A.R.E. officer. After retiring from JPD, Rick began his second career with TSA in the Department of Homeland Security, eventually becoming a Federal Security Director. His current position was as a Security Specialist working for the Brevard Board of Education and Brevard County Sheriff’s office.

In Rick’s off duty time, he loved boating with family and friends, and riding his Harley in the company of his Legion of St. Michael brothers. He was blessed with so many close friends over the years, in whose company he made the memories that brought him so much joy, and will now sustain his loved ones.

Surviving is his wife, Louann Scully DePietro, whom he married August 1, 1987; a son Nicholas DePietro of New York; two brothers: Daniel S. “Chip” DePietro and his wife Maureen of Englewood, FL, R. Scott DePietro of Georgia; and nieces and nephews: Matthew (Alexis), Brandon, and Ryan DePietro and Scott (Rachel), Garrett, and Caleigh DePietro, and Nichole (Bobby) Springer.

Rick was preceded in death by his son Gregory DePietro on May 12, 2022; his father Raymond DePietro on May 16, 2002; his mother Sally M. DePietro on December 1, 2009; his maternal grandparents Anthony and Marie Ognibene and his paternal grandparents Gelsomino and Filomina DiPietro.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2023 in Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church, Falconer. Rev. Don Watkins pastor of Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church will be celebrant. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Friends will be received by the family from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in the Falconer Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors) or the American Cancer Society.
