Sharon N. Filegar

Sharon N. Filegar, 77, of Gerry, N.Y., passed away at home in the early hours of Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021.

Although a resident of Gerry for over the last three decades, Sharon was born on April 23, 1944, in Detroit, Mich., and had lived in various locations in Michigan, Kentucky, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Colorado.

A 1962 graduate of Berkley High School and a 1966 graduate of Spring Arbor College, she was an elementary teacher (mainly 4th grade) who will always be recognized by and for her penmanship. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church for most of her life (most recently in Jamestown, N.Y.), where she was very active in children’s ministries, Sunday school, camping, missions, koinonia groups, Bible studies, assistant- treasurer, and women’s ministry. And, since coming to New York, she was a faithful part of the Cattaraugus Christian camp family where she would freely start a conversation with anyone and find something in common.

Quick to remember a person’s name (including middle names), birthdates, and a myriad of anecdotal stories, Sharon will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many.

She enjoyed reading, writing, travelling, baking (except for pie crusts), and all Hallmark movies, but above all she loved God and her family – and would do anything for them.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver Marshall and Nadene (Spencer) Westphal; and stepfather, Howard A. Westphal; both of her husbands: first, Kenneth H. Auch and then, Donald P. Filegar; and one grandson, Zachary.

Surviving her are her three sons: Scott (Stephanie) Auch of Fraser, Mich., Shawn (Michelle) Auch of Holley, N.Y., and Trent (Renee) Auch of Celoron, N.Y.; four step-daughters: Linda Filegar of Jamestown, N.Y., Carol Schwenk of Erie, Pa., Nancy Filegar of Jerome, Idaho, and Mindy (Bill) Glotz of Sugar Grove, Pa.; 15 grandchildren: Devin, Soren, Sophie, Mikaela, Marek, Cassie, Derreck, Carrie, Ashley, Jonathan, Justin, Tyler, Matthew, William, and Alex; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister: Linda Schrock of Coldwater, Mich.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, at the Jamestown Free Methodist Church (515 East 7th St.). Visitation will be one hour before the funeral. (Masks will be required indoors.) The Rev. Dodi McIntyre, will officiate. Interment will be at the Lake View Cemetery.
