Henry Herbert (Herb) Magnuson

MAPLE SPRINGS- Henry Herbert (Herb) Magnuson was born Oct. 25, 1932, in Jamestown, the son of the late Henry William and Alice Jacobson Magnuson. He and his family moved to Mayville in 1933 to 16 Morris St.

He attended Mayville Central School. He joined the Naval Reserve in 1949 and signed up for active duty when the Korean War broke out and had to go to retraining at Bainbridge Naval Base in Maryland. From there he was shipped to Boston where he boarded the USS Columbus and spent his remaining time cruising the Mediterranean with the Sixth Fleet. He was honorably discharged in 1953.

Herb then worked for the village of Mayville. In April of 1955 he married the former Laurel Hunt. He accepted a job a month later from Rochester Telephone Co. where he worked for a year and then moved back to Mayville after accepting a job at Jamestown Telephone Co. from which he retired after thirty-nine years of service.

He was a life member of the Maple Springs Fire Department having served as assistant fire chief and was also on the Board of Fire Commissioners for several years. Herb was also a member of the Mayville American Legion William L. Travis Post 493 and the Vikings Lodge 65.

Herb enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially fishing with his two brothers in law: Larry and Lyle Hunt on trips to Georgia Bay. He also enjoyed being Grampa and then Great Grampa (Papa). After retirement he enjoyed Friday morning coffee with phone company employees and retirees to hear the latest gossip and to see the guys. He also organized the annual retiree Christmas party each first week of December at the See-Zuhr House.

Besides his wife, Laurie, he is survived by his two sons; Gary (Carolyn) Magnuson of Brocton and Rob Magnuson of Maple Springs, his sister and her husband; Patty and Jon Morton of Ashville, four grandchildren; Erin (Matt) Holt of Darien Center, Jason Remington of Fredonia, Eric (Lindsay) Remington of Brocton, and Michelle Remington of Panama, seven great grandchildren; Anna Holt of Darien Center, Daulton, Jasmine Jackson, Gracie, Leighanna Remington of Brocton, and Alyvia Remington of Panama. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his two brothers in law; Lyle Hunt and Larry Hunt and two sisters in law; Sharon Romba and Bev Hunt.

The funeral will be held at noon on Friday, Feb. 26, 2021, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S. Erie St.). The Rev. Daniel Prewitt will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery in the family plot. A walk-through visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until noon prior to the service at the funeral home. Face masks and social distancing required.
