Rexford J. “Rex” Wissman

Rexford J. “Rex” Wissman, 79, of Gerry, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday (Nov. ,25, 2020) at his home.

A lifelong area resident he was born March 5, 1941, in Jamestown, the son of the Oscar and Nellie Damon Wissman.

Rex was a 1960 graduate of Cassadaga Valley High School and was employed by (Amsco) American Sterilizer, Ulrich Plan Filing and Adanloc. He also owned and operated the former Town Deli Pizza Shop in Gerry and the Gerry Diner. During retirement Rex was employed at Ken Asel RV.

Rex had coached Babe Ruth Baseball in the 1960s, and during the 1980s and 90s coached Gerry Fire Department in the 4th Battalion Softball League. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and was a member of South Hills Country Club. Rex enjoyed attending his kids and grandkids sporting events, golfing and gardening.

Surviving are his wife, Sally M. Yagger Wissman of 59 years, whom he married Oct. 9, 1961n in Texas; two sons: Tim (Leigh) Wissman and Todd (Laurie) Wissman; a daughter, Cynthia Wissman (Josh Davis); four grandchildren: Mike Wissman (Samantha Reale), Alex (Katie) Wissman, Katelyn Wissman, Thomas (Courtney) Wissman; his mother, Nellie Wissman; a sister, Luella (Hank) Storm; and and a sister-in-law, Daphene Wissman.

He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Wissman in 1994; and a brother, Jon Wissman in 2011.

Rex wishes were to donate his body to science at the University at Buffalo Anatomical Gift Program. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
