Martha Elizabeth Jordan

Martha Elizabeth Jordan, 87, of 222 Arlington Ave., died Monday, Aug. 10, 2020 in UPMC Hamot, Erie, Pa.

She was born December 2, 1932, in New York City, the daughter of the late Alwood and Amelia Campbell Harvey. Growing up, she lived in Astoria-Long Island, N.Y., and then Poughkeepsie and Thornwood, N.Y.

Prior to her retirement, she was a devoted teacher and administrator for over 50 years. Her teaching career began in 1954 at Bethpage Schools on Long Island. In 1960 she moved on to teach at Freeport Schools. In 1970, moved to Lakewood, NY, where she began teaching in the Jamestown Public School District.

A consummate professional, she took sabbatical leave in 1978 to attend St. Bonaventure University, where she graduated with Masters of Arts in educational administration. She also participated in the NYS Exchange Teacher Program, traveling to South Australia to collaborate and share ideas about best practices with other teachers in the country.

In addition, she was a Certified Early Literacy Trainer for New York State (1988) and served as principal at Love Elementary School. In 1992, she authored and implemented for Jamestown Schools: Parents and Children Together (PACT) Program and in 1999, she became an administrative liaison for Universal Pre-Kindergarten, and was asked to build and maintain the program for the Jamestown School District.

She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi (Honorary Educational Society), Phi Delta Kappa (Educational Society) serving as president 1979-82, Chautauqua County Reading Association, National Educational Association and As-sociation for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

She was a former board member of Little Theatre of Jamestown, where she participated in many stage productions.

She enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading, politics, Jones Beach, Cape Cod, and annual trips with her daughter, Sheri to New York City at Christmas time to attend Broadway shows.

Surviving are two children: Sheri Jordan of Jamestown and Glenn (Beth) Jordan of Rochester, N.Y.; three grandsons: Alexander, Taylor and Brian Jordan; a sister, Margaret Hernan of Springfield, Ore.; and nieces and nephews: Debbie, Cindy, Pam, Michael, Jeffrey, Chris and Scott, to whom she was especially close.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Al-wood Harvey; and a nephew, Mark Harvey.

A graveside service will be held at Lake View Cemetery at a later date.
