Jessie S. Moss Syper

MAYVILLE — Jessie S. Moss Syper, 75, of Mayville, passed away Monday, Dec. 9, 2019, at her home.

She was born Dec. 1, 1944, in Westfield, N.Y., the daughter of the late William and Ruth VanGeisen Moss.

Jessie had been the owner of an auto repair shop, Mayville Service Center. Along with her husband, Denny, they served the residents of Mayville and seasonal visitors for over 50 years.

She was a long time member of the Mayville Fire Department Auxiliary, having served as treasurer and secretary, she had held the position of Village of Mayville Planning Board chairperson, was a member of the Mayville United Methodist Church, and had been a member of the Westfield Quilters Guild for over 20 years.

Jessie enjoyed quilting, crocheting, knitting, and reading. She was very community minded and loved public service. Most of all, she enjoyed being with her family, especially time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis A. Syper, whom she married Aug, 16, 1963, in the Mayville United Methodist Church; three children: Dennis A. (Rebecca) Syper of Mayville, Richard (Lynette) Syper of Mayville, and Linda Kern of Charleston, S.C.; nine grandchildren: Amber Wiborn, Dennis Randall Syper, Michael Smith, Amy Smith, Katherine Syper, Victoria Syper, Ricky Syper Jr., Justin Wrighten and Jason Kern; two great-grandchildren: Kerri Syper and Gemma Syper; one brother, Michael Moss of Mayville; one sister; Virginia (Elliott) Long of Mayville; several nieces, nephews and cousins; her extended family in Florida; and several close friends who she considered family.

Jessie was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers: James and William Moss.

Friends will be received for visitation from 4-6 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S Erie St). A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
