Sylvia M. Pollock

Sylvia M. Pollock, 79, passed peacefully with her family by her side on Oct. 11, 2019, at Mercy Health Hospice House in Poland, Ohio.

She was born Jan. 16, 1940, daughter of John and Florence Meli. Sylvia was a lifelong resident of Jamestown, N.Y.

She graduated from Jamestown High School in 1958, where she enjoyed playing clarinet with the marching band.

During her career, Sylvia wore many hats including working for Coca-Cola, American Greetings and Revco. She spent many years as a bookkeeper, and she was very proud of running a pick, pack and ship operation for the Red Green Show out of her home in Fluvanna.

She resided at Brookdale Assisted Living in Lakewood, N.Y., before moving to The Inn at Ironwood in Canfield, Ohio, to be closer to her son, Shawn and his wife. Typical of Sylvia, she became an important part of her new community, making many friends and enjoying all types of activities including playing in some very intense balloon volleyball matches, numerous card games, and attending many concerts.

She is survived by her sons: Shawn (Amy) Moore of Canfield, Ohio, and Jeffrey (Debbie) Moore of Bemus Point, N.Y.; stepsons: Irwin G. (Glenda) Pollock II of North Carolina; Douglas S. (Twanna) Pollock of Harrodsburg, Ky., Daryle E. Pollock of Attica, N.Y.; and stepdaughter, V. Michelle (Schuyler) Cross of Mayville, N.Y. Sylvia also leaves behind her grandchildren including: Brennan and Dylan Moore, Joshua and Jacob Pollock, Crisinda Orr, Krystle Grooms, Arthur Dahlgren, Thadius and Zachariah Arthur, Benjamin Cross and Gene Anthony Pollock, as well as several greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin Pollock, whom she married on May 17, 1986; her father, John F. Meli Jr.; and her mother, Florence Meli.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Sylvia’s name to Mercy Health-Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514 or Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Road, Jamestown, NY 14701.
