Mary Joanne M. Fisher

ASHVILLE — Mary Joanne M. Fisher, 90, of Open Meadows Road, Ashville, died Thursday, June 13, 2019, at UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie, Pa.

She was born April 25, 1929, in Gary, Ind., the daughter of the late Joseph T. and Ruth Garrett McMahon.

Joanne had been a homemaker, taking care of and raising her four children while also helping her husband with the family’s farm. In earlier years she had also worked for Flickinger’s Inc, Food Distributor and as a preschool teacher in Blockville.

She had been a past member of the Open Meadows United Methodist Church, a current member of the Panama United Methodist Church, the Home Bureau (AKA “Brew”), an 18-year member and previous president of the Chautauqua Central School Board of Education, a member of the North Harmony Senior Citizens, and a Lady’s Home Auxiliary.

Joanne enjoyed scrap booking, traveling, sewing, knitting, flower gardening, playing the flute, reading, cheering for her New York Yankees, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her three daughters; Mary Joyce (Franklin) D’Aurizio of Rochester, N.Y., Shirley (Don) Hewes of Ashville, and Carolyn (Dan Milliman) of Portland; eight grandchildren: Karri (Chip III) Edwards, Craig (Kelly) Hewes, Anna (Mario) Smith, Curtis Hewes, Chelsea Fisher, Christopher Hewes, Amber Fisher, and Courtney Hewes; five great grandchildren: Addison, Devin, Lexis, Mary Kathryn, and Bradley, and one first cousin; Steven Gauly.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband; George Fisher, whom she married June 18, 1949, at Hurlbut United Methodist Church at the Chautauqua Institution, her parents, a son; Garrett Fisher and one grandson; Bradley Smith.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2019, at 11 a.m. at the Panama United Methodist Church (22 Main St, Panama, NY). The Rev. Steven Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in the Open Meadows Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S Erie St).
