Allen E. Smith

He was born Oct. 23, 1924, in Dewittville, the son of the late Ernest R. and Helen Vandewark Smith.

Allen was a graduate of Mayville Central School. He had worked as an office manager for Farr Lumber in Westfield. He had also worked at the Ford Plant in Buffalo, the County Home, Gay-Mark Tire, and was a tractor mechanic.

He was a member of the Mayville Maranatha Baptist Church.

Allen enjoyed wood working, raising his Santa Gertrudis cattle, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his two children: Gene (Loretta) Smith of Kiantone and Evangelene Trowbridge of Iowa; one granddaughter, Sara Smith Becker of Jamestown; three brothers: Charles (Nancy) Smith of Westfield, Peter Smith of Mayville, and Larry (Marlene) Smith of Honeoye, N.Y.; four sisters: Marybelle Smith of Westfield, Ruth Frudd of Westfield, Susan (David) Hindman of Dewittville, and Margaret “Peggy” (Joseph) Kelwaski of Sherman; one foster brother, Christopher Bemis, of Stockton; and many nieces and nephews.

Allen was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor B. Nellis Smith, whom he married June 16, 1945, in the Pleasantville Church in Dewittville; three sisters: Kathleen Turpin, Esther Lawson and Alice Francis; two brothers: David Smith and Herbert Smith; one grandson: Daniel Smith; and a son-in-law: Jack Trowbridge.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., on Monday, May 6, 2019, at the Mayville Maranatha Church (43 Academy Street). The Rev. Norman Burdick will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m on Sunday, May 5, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 South Erie St).
