Carman Howard Scadden

“When I quit leaving, I’ll be gone.” Carman “Carm” “Munga” Howard Scadden, age 76, of Sherman, N.Y., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, after a brief illness at UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa.

Carman was born June 14, 1942, in Jamestown, N.Y., to the late Carman H. and Gloria Wilcox Scadden. Raised in Sherman, he attended Sherman Schools and graduated from Sherman High School. He was a Motor Equipment Operator for the Chautauqua County Highway Department, retiring in 2001. Carman served in the United States Air Force from 1960-64. He and his first wife Linda lived in Idaho from 1973-1985 where he worked for the Idaho State Highway Department.

He was an avid hunter and sportsman. Carman collected cast iron cookware, he enjoyed blue grass music and attending blue grass music festivals. Carman enjoyed auctions of all kinds, collected and repaired stringed musical instruments and played the fiddle, mandolin and guitar. Carman enjoyed square dancing with his first wife Linda, and country partner dancing with his second wife Gayle. Carm had an engaging personality and made friends easily where ever he went. He was a Life Member of NRA, and also a member of the Westfield Moose and Mayville VFW.

Carman is survived by: his wife of 24 years Gayle Douglas Scadden; four children: Anneliese May Scadden of Las Vegas, Nev., Krista (Kevin) Rhebergen of Sherman, N.Y., Shane (Tammy) Scadden of Sherman, N.Y., and Jeffrey (Stacey) Scadden of Ripley, N.Y.; four stepchildren: Marty (Kelly) Hamilton of Wattsburg, Pa., Becky Hamilton (David Gulnac) of North East, Pa., Cindy Johnson (Ricky Ayers) of Sherman, N.Y., and Randy (Tammy) Hamilton of Findley Lake, N.Y., 30 plus grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a sister, Glenna Scadden of Liberty, Texas and a step-brother, Cameron (Heather) Scadden of Indiana.

Besides his parents he is predeceased by his former wife LindaSadler.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by the Spitzer Funeral Home.
