RANDOLPH –Joan S. Yergens, 86, of Conewango Road, Randolph and Venice, Fla., passed away at 11:40 p.m., Tuesday (Nov. 29, 2018) at home, with her family by her side, while under the care of Hospice.

She was born Jan. 3, 1932, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., the daughter of the late Garrett and Vermadelle (Sharron) Myers. Joan was a 1949 graduate of Randolph Central School.

Joan retired in 1992 as a senior clerk for the Cattaraugus County Sheriff for 20 years, while also being a homemaker. In previous years, she had worked for GMAC in Jamestown and for the First Bank of Randolph.

She was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Randolph, where she served on the Altar & Rosary Society. Joan was a life member of the Randolph American Legion Post 181 Auxiliary and was a social member of the Randolph Veterans of Foreign War Post 6533 and vice president of the Japanese Gardens Women’s Club in Venice, Fla. She was a former member of the Randolph Fire Company Auxiliary, Randolph Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 2271 and had volunteered for Meals on Wheels in Randolph.

Her interests included, baking, playing bingo, cooking, playing cards, walking and reading. She was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, William L. “Bill” Yergens, whom she married Sept. 29, 1956; a daughter, Lisa (Christopher) Spencer of Canandaigua, N.Y.; three sons: Kenneth W. (Joy) Yergens of Jamestown, Gary M. (Kim) Yergens of San Marcos, Calif., and Robert M. Yergens of Randolph; three grandchildren: Stephanie (Josh) Meddaugh of McDonough, Georgia, Chelsea Yergens of Dayton, Ohio and Olivia Spencer, and a freshman at the Rochester Institute of Technology; and a great-grand- son, Ryan William Meddaugh.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William Singley in 2016; and a brother-in-law, Kendrick Yergens in 1998.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday (Dec. 4, 2018) in the VanRensselaer & Son Funeral Home, 14 Church St., Randolph, from where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday. The Rev. Joseph Janaczek will officiate. Inurnment will be in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Randolph at a later date.
